What got you interested in clay?

Elementary school teachers. Art projects, clay, fingerpainting.

How long have you been working in clay?

The summer of 1959 Hawaii was annexed. I found maybe clay in backyard make Tiki’s and my dad put together in a beer can & BBQ. I made a necklace and I wore it all summer.

What does your work intend to say?

- Craftsmanship -

Who and what are your biggest influences?

Asian, Korean, Indigenous Pottery, Organic Shapes

What inspires you?

Other artists, nature, bones

What's your favorite piece of artwork that you've created?

My son co-produced – the last one.

What is your most important artist tool?

Ideas – other artists – good clay

How do you want your work to affect your audience?

I want them to be curious about how it’s done. I want them to want it.

Describe your idea of artistic success?

Looking back at old works and appreciate it and see timeline and how far you have progressed. Being please but not satisfied.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Don’t be afraid to fail, practice and try new techniques.
